3 Packs

Wine is confusing. We get that.

But we firmly believe the best way to learn about wine is to just drink it. So every other week we'll put together a different "3-Pack" focused on a grape, a region, or some other theme. Each pack features 3 bottles, tasting notes, and food pairing suggestions. We can’t think of a better way to learn about wine.

WINE RESOLUTION: Explore Wine Evolutionary Theory

Now & Later Rioja 3-Pack

We love the idea of buying bottles in multiples  One for drinking now…one for later…one for even later.  It’s the best way (actually, the only way) to experience how a wine evolves over time.

This 3-Pack makes it easy by bringing together three bottles of Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserve 2003.  This is old-school style combines red fruits with a leathery complexity and exotic spices.  With age, it will develop exotic tea-like characteristics.

Highly versatile – even pairs with chicken or spicy foods.

Pack includes: 3 bottles of Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva 2003

Price: $74.99

Now & Then Chianti 2-Pack

chianti - web.jpgWe think this 2-Pack is extremely cool. Two bottles. Same region (Chianti.) Same grape (Sangiovese.) Same producer (Castell'In Villa.) But one bottle is from 2005 and one is from 1996. See what a difference 13 years can make.

The 2005 has the classic sour cherries and dusty earth of a good, old-school Chianti.  13 years later (or really, 13 year before), the 1996 has mellowed out, developing notes of tea leaves while still retaining ghostly hints of it’s original fruit.

Pair both bottles with simply prepared meat and drink them side by side.  You’ll effectively be tasting time in a bottle.

Pack includes:

Castell'In Villa Chianti Classico 1996
Castell'In Villa Chianti Classico 2005

Price: $44.99

WINE RESOLUTION: Try a Side-by-Side Comparison

Old World/New World 2-Pack - Bordeaux Blend

old world bordeaux - web.jpgSouth Africa is turning out some of the best Bordeaux-style blends we've come across (outside of Bordeaux of course.) A huge hit last year, this pack pairs a St Emillion from Bordeaux's right bank with a similar blend from a top South African producer.

Pack includes:

Chateau Beau Vallon, (Saint Emilion, Bordeaux, France): Classic right bank Bordeaux, with dark fruits balanced by notes of cedar and tobacco.

De Toren Z (Stellenbosch, South Africa): One of South Africa’s best producers, this wine offers great value.  More plushness than an actual Bordeaux, but still elegant and earthy.

Price: $47.99

Old World/New World 2-Pack - Rhone Blend

old new rhone - web.jpgThe same grapes, Syrah (aka Shiraz) + Grenache, result in two wildly different wines. We've paired a classic Cotes du Rhone (dark fruit, earth, whiffs of black pepper) with an equally classic blend from Mclaren Vale, Australia (lush, opulent cherry/berry fruits, sweet spice.) Can't decide which you like more? That's OK, we won't tell.

Pack includes:

Bernard Latour Domaine de L'Espigoutte (Cotes du Rhone, France): Classic Rhone blend of fruit, earthiness and a kick of black pepper on the finish.

Slipstream (McLaren Vale, Australia): Sexy stuff – rich, ripe berry fruit, a hint of dried herbs, and a velvety finish.

Price: $33.99

Old World/NewWorld 2-Pack - Chardonnay

old new chardonnay - web.jpgIt's become increasingly fashionable to declare a disdain for Chardonnay. But before you let your friends (or yourself) completely write the grape off, this 2-Pack should be mandatory drinking. It features two classics: a creamy (but very well-balanced) California version and a crisp, fresh version from the Macon region of France.

Le Bourcier “Cuveé Elena” (Macon, Burgundy, France): Vibrant Chardonnay flavors shine through with hints of citrus, apple, and stone fruits.

Sebastiani Chardonnay (Sonoma, California): A bit of oak and a warmer climate make for a creamier, toastier version of Chardonnay

Price: $23.99

Old World/New World 2-Pack - Malbec

old new malbec - web.jpgThe Malbec grape and Argentina are proving to be one of the wine world's great matches. But many people don't realize the grape first found its home in France, where it's still grown in the Cahors region.

The winner in this classic old school vs. new school challenge? We bet on "both."

Cedrus (Cahors, France): From Malbec’s original home – France. Earthy, a bit more structured, maybe even a touch rustic.

Nieto Senetiner Reserva Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina): Malbec is the star grape of Argentina. This one is a bright, fresh style, with vibrant plums, violets and just a touch of oak.

Price: $22.99

WINE RESOLUTION: Really Get to Know a Grape

Pinot Noir Sampler Pack

pinot2.jpgKnow someone under the spell of Pinot Noir (like maybe yourself?) Help them keep the magic going. This pack pulls together three very different expressions of the same magical grape.

Pack includes:

Leon Beyer Pinot Noir 2005 (Alsace, France): Mineral-driven, sweet/tart fruit, with an bit of forest floor development. A totally different sort of Pinot Noir.

Siduri Pinot Noir 2008 (Willamette Valley, Oregon): Classic Willamette Valley = dark fruits balanced with Oregon earthiness.

Jean-Marc Millot Cote de Nuit-Village "Aux Faulques" 2007 (Burgundy, France):  Terrific village-level Burgundy.  Lovely balance of fruit and earth, structure and elgance.
